MENS WEAR
WITH DESIGNS ON MEN
Men’s fashions have scaled new heights in the past few years. Spearheading this trend is SC Sharma who caters to the well dressed male of today. Located in the plush marketing complex of Connaught Place, Sharma’s suits are well known for their perfection.
Watch out! This year the smart look for men will come in loose front open jackets in tericot or teriwool, forecast the
Sharmas. The jackets will combine dignity with style and will be available in various shades. For the more conventional there are well matched ensembles of coat and trousers, ready to wear. They have been matched to the dictates of international fashion.
As for the more fashion conscious, baggy pullovers in a bold synthesis of colours and yarn are available. Daring young men zipping across on motorcycles can share these pullovers with their girlfriends. These new designs, says Rajesh Sharma, the Director/ Owner, will be a real sell out. This is not all. There will be a change from pink shirts which have flooded the market lately to shirts of different colours and prints. In cotton shirts, the Sharman are way ahead with fashions and prints. Being exporters of shirts they feel they are able to introduce simultaneously to the Indian market the styles and fashions in current vogue in the west. Breeding fashion conscious men as they are, Sharmas also offer exclusive accessories like ties, belts et al.
For the Delhiite, Sharmas has always been there. They have been known for their well tailored suits. Even today most men who get their suits tailored prefer to go to Sharmas. Very often wedding suits are made by them for the grooms who are not willing to settle for anything less than the best on such occasions. Rajesh Sharma tells me the story of how 50 years back when Indian men were predominantly clothed in dhoti and kurta, there was a man who foresaw the changing future in men’s garments. Somewhere back in the late 20s a young man from a village called Pahasu in Uttar Pradesh, came to Delhi to earn his fortune. He worked as a cutter in various tailoring shops and also saved money diligently. One fine morning he set off for London to do a one year course in men’s tailoring. This man was Mr. S.C. Sharma. He worked both in England and India for a short while after finishing the course and in 1935 bought this showroom. Catering mainly to foreigners with a high percentage of Russians, Sharma’s reputation grew with time. Quality and comfort became synonymous with S.C. Sharma and a large clientele has been built up on that assurance. “That is why we are still at the top in spite of heavy competition;’ says Rajesh, the grandson of S.C. Sharma.
Today men’s wear accounts for 65 per cent of the readymades market, but it must have called for some foresight to enter this line so many decades ago when women led the way in fashions. The fashion show organised by the Sharmas in 1989 showroom in Connaught Place has a drew large crowds revealing the extent mezannine neatly stocked with ready of dress consciousness in men. Most to wear trousers, coats and colourful men are still traditional and hard to waistcoats. With people having less change (don’t women know!) but and less time and patience to wait some, especially the younger genera these ready mades are a boon and are willing to try something dif have become increasingly popular.
