Speed Monsters -Suzuki SX4

Hit the road with the new Suzuki SX4 and the Royal Enfield Bullet 500, two stylish machines that redefine the limits of three digit blasts on the road.

THE SUZUKI SX4, designed by Giugiaro and ITAL Design, looks well-balanced apart from the oversized wheels, which look out of proportion - and the front and rear sections are quite neatly integrated.

The headlights wrap themselves around the fenders. Getting into the car, you see that the SX4 has a macho black facia with chrome highlights-that straddle the central console. The steering wheel, power window buttons, air- conditioner vents, some switchgear and the gear stick are simply carried over from the Swift.

The seats are comfortable, although the tall might feel a little cramped. While seating three behind, the passenger in the centre is likely to be uncomfortable, thanks to the SX4’s central retractable armrest that protrudes into the back. Add a high central tunnel between the third passenger's feet, a legacy of the SX4’s four-wheel-drive system, and you know the person in the middle isn’t having fun.

However, the SX4 is loaded with equipment, including ABS, airbags, climate control, leather seats and audio controls on the steering wheel. What’s impressive is a smoother idle and a stronger mid-range. From 2500 rpm to 5000 rpm, SX4 just leaps forward and goes from zero to 100 kph in 12.1 seconds. The SX4’s gearbox feels very similar to that of the Swift - the throw is short and crisp, but shifting needs a firm shove, especially when going from the fifth to fourth gear.

Sitting on those big tyres, with a massive 190mm ground clearance. the SX4 can be classified as an off­-roader and its ability to ride over some of our worst roads is impressive. However, the SX4’s set­up is too stiff to be comfortable at low and medium speeds. The brakes inspire confidence. Given the large engine and weight, it comes as no surprise that it managed only 11.9 kpl.
