Dangerous Obsession
Often, OCD manifests itself in thoughts and images that keep flashing through a person's mind despite attempts to contro1 them. Some times, the thoughts are sexual and violent. "Some people experience a compulsive need to inflict physical injury when they see sharp instruments like scissors or knives lying around-They are usually prone to violence, verbal abuse, and perversion. And at ten suffer from aggressive thoughts.' says Dr Chandrasekh.
Obsessions and compulsive behaviour can spill over to spiritual life as well. Some people are obsessed with religion and in extreme cases are known to fantasise about gods. Doctors say this kind of obsession stems from superstition and repressed desires.
Those who recognize that there thoughts and actions area bit excessive and control such behaviour manage to live normal lives without distressing loved ones or co-workers. But sometimes, these rituals take on a life of their own and spiral beyond control. That's when the mind loses its grip over thoughts and actions and it affects all spheres of the person’s life. Like work, relationships and general health.
Chemical Imbalances: Though doctors and scientists
don’t know exactly what causes these disorders recent research has indicated
that a chemical imbalance is one cause. This imbalance is brought about by the
decrease in the level of the hormone serotonin. Serotonin helps carry messages
from one nerve cell to another Without adequate serotonin, the brain's alarm
system overreacts and misinterprets information. "The reason is primarily biological
though a combination of environmental issues can add to the stress," says Dr
Megha Hazuria-Gore of Delhi's Max Hospital.
